Finding the Right Exfoliant for Your Skin Type

Exfoliation is the process of helping your skin shed dead cells so newer, fresher skin can come forward. Done correctly, it smooths texture, brightens tone, and allows your other products—like serums and moisturizers—to work more effectively. But not every type of exfoliation is right for every skin type. Choosing the right one makes all the difference between glowing results and irritation.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, chemical exfoliants with salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA) are a great option. They work deep in the pores to clear excess oil and help prevent breakouts. Gentle physical scrubs with smooth, round beads can also be used, but avoid harsh particles like walnut or apricot shells, which can cause micro-tears.

For dry or mature skin, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic acid or glycolic acid are especially beneficial. They not only help with cell turnover, but also attract moisture, improving both texture and hydration. A mild enzyme exfoliant (like papaya or pumpkin) can also be soothing while revealing a healthy glow.

Combination or sensitive skin needs balance. Enzyme exfoliants are often the gentlest choice, offering effective results without over-drying or irritating. If you want to try AHAs or BHAs, start slowly (once a week) and choose formulas labeled for sensitive skin. Always follow with a good moisturizer and sunscreen, since exfoliation makes skin more sun-sensitive.
